In the spring of 1983, Father Joseph Fata commissioned Akron artist Brian B. Heard to construct statues of Mary, Joseph & the Christ Child. The clay figures were painstakingly carved, allowed to dry over a period of two months and then fired.
Apparently, in 1987 someone accidentally knocked over the Christ Child statue
and it was broken.
Mary held a place of honor in the southwest corner of the Church at the Marian chapel until March of 2017. At that time due to the crumbling condition of the statue, a new Blessed Mary statue was added as a gift from the Kotkowski family in memory of Rita.
Joseph greeted everyone as they entered the Narthex and was fittingly sitting on a carpenter's bench. Likewise, due to the deterioration of our Saint Joseph statue is deteriorating it was replaced in 2017.
Brian B. Heard, 69, passed away on October 6, 2003, after a long battle with cancer. He was a graduate of the University of Akron and Kent State University, where he received his master's degree. He served as the art director for the Akron Public Schools, retiring in 1989 after 32 years of service, and was himself an accomplished artist and sculptor.
